“Your Identity Should Only Be in Christ!”

Ever heard this? There’s little to no Biblical basis for it.

If anyone ever tells you that your identity should only be in Christ, run.

Why? Because nothing in the Bible supports that premise. Various identities such as family roles, nationalities, ancestries, occupations, and other backgrounds pop up throughout the bible and no one ever has a problem with those. We can accept that David’s transition from shepherd to king, Moses’s marriage, and the Apostles’ various professions and personalities can coexist alongside their faith in God. If none of these things were mentioned in the Bible, it wouldn’t be a very interesting or relevant book the way it is today.

When certain Christians (you know who you are) take this approach to sexuality, it’s completely disingenuous. They don’t ever tell people to not identify with their career, education, or even which sports teams they follow. Instead, this speaks volumes about their discomfort with sexuality. Chances are, they hold beliefs that aren’t conducive to open, honest discussions of sex in general. This can cause them to shut down when sexuality comes up as a topic. Others hold misconceptions about variations in sexual or romantic orientation such as that these things are a choice, are only about sex, or that they are always congruent.
