North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson has made a recent statement that LGBTQ+ identities are “filth” and that no child should learn about them in a public school setting. When asked by a CNN affiliate, Robinson said that he was referring to “intimate details” about sexuality itself rather than the fight for equality. He said that public school students in North Carolina should focus on “reading, writing, and arithmetic” rather than on “topics that should be discussed at home.”

Democratic state senators Jeff Jackson and Wiley Nickel have condemned Robinson’s statement as “open discrimination”, which the two senators find “completely unacceptable”. Jackson, who plans to run for US senate in 2022, called for Robinson to resign via Tweet. Nickel added that Robinson’s use is a “disgrace” and an “embarrassment” to North Carolina.

Robinson invoked the Constitution to defend his views saying that the First Amendment grants him the right to live by his standards, which he says are built on “deeply held religious values”. He went on to call the backlash an attack on Christianity saying “they [LGBTQ+ people and their allies] always come after the Christians”.
