I gave up on Steemit. The idea of monetization with cryptocurrency interested me, especially as a cryptocurrency enthusiast myself, but I eventually quit after putting a lot of time and effort into my blog.

For context, I’ve been on Steemit for a while (about a year) and, at first, I have wondered why more people don’t use Steemit. The cryptocurrency-powered blogging platform allowed me to slowly, but surely accumulate some cash for my writing. After all, it’s a way to monetize without ads or paid memberships. I gained a bit of a following as well and even made a Twitter account in the hopes of reaching a wider audience. However, after a while, I began to realize that Steemit may not be the platform for me.

For background, I’m a college student looking to build a study abroad fund and get a little pocket money for snacks and clothes. The total value of my account on Steemit can buy me a coffee and a cookie, but that was after months of consistent (once a week) posts in the 500-word range. I knew I wouldn’t get rich quick, but I wanted a bit of pocket change. My account value used to be around $20 before the bear market hit, which left me a bit frustrated. My account tanked to about 1/4 of its original value when the bear market hit. While I do blame myself for not saving my Steem power early on, most of these problems are due to the current nature of the beast.
