Jesus is King as a Milestone in Christian Music

Opinions Kanye West’s Christianity aside, his album, is a refreshing take on lyrics in Christian music.

Kanye West’s recent conversion to Christianity has left some rallying behind him and others skeptical of this apparent change. This post will not attempt to assess the validity of his faith, but break down the themes of his recent album Jesus is King. Regardless of any opinions of Kanye as an artist or a person, it is still a milestone in America’s music industry for a famous, largely secular artist to release explicitly Christian materials with the intent to target Christians. Considering that, in previous years, this man has released a song titled “I am a God” in the album Yeezus, it is likely that I will track the progress (or lack of progress) of his faith and the effect it has on others.

Even just by looking at the lyrics of the songs, I can see that Kanye West brought his personality to these songs in the same way that he would do so with any other songs. He does not shy away from his history of decidedly un-Christlike behaviors and images he put forth in the past. He references Instagram throughout the album and references Chick-fil-a in “Closed on Sunday”. Chick-fil-a is a controversial fast-food chain known for making donations for anti-LGBTQ organizations…
