I don't think Heath's audience was the art history-savvy sort. If they were, they'd probably have more of an understanding of how gendered variations in depictions of Jesus have clues into what the church culture at the time was like. The Daily Mail seems to be the British version of Fox News here in the US, the latter of which can't even be called news due to various legal reasons.
I wonder why people get so angry when they receive opportunities to divorce Jesus from the White male standard. For some people, maybe it's because they know their faith has no basis without it. For others, it might be a parasocial relationship-type thing where they see Jesus outside of heavily culturally mediated encounters and then lash out in disappointment and grief.
